For parents to keep up with technology is one thing, but it’s another to try and crack the ever-changing codes of teen texting.  I read a great local article lately about teens’ slang and texting terms.  Kaylee Merchak of KFDA in Amarillo shares her research regarding the newest texting terms for sex and drugs.

Take a minute to read through Merchak’s article, “Teen Talk: The Codes You Need to Know”, here.

Merchak states, It’s not just words and numbers causing concerns. Experts advise to be aware of certain ‘Emojis’ as well. ‘Gang’ can be spelled out using a combination of the gas pump and letter emojis, Eggplant and peach emojis can also imply sexual references.  Abbreviations are also popular with teenagers. C-U-4-6 (see you for sex), GNOC (get naked on camera), and PAW (parents are watching) are just a few that are popular.”

The article also suggests Urban DictionaryNo Slang, and Net smartz411, [are] sites that will help decodes many words teens are using.”

I’m thankful for this article and for articles like this.  As parents, we have to be continually diligent in researching and understanding our teens’ culture.  These are different and difficult times.  The enemy is out to “kill, steal, and destroy” in any manner possible.  These newest slang terms are just another tool to derail our kids for what God really has in store for them–a life of righteousness lived for His glory!

Be on guard.  My love,
